New levy on householders

How can the Government justify taking €100 per annum household charge from house owners in this recession? While a report this morning shows that many older people cannot afford to heat their houses over the winter, pension levies bite deep and Vat rates increase this is a purely penal tax. Surely there are other ways of bolstering finances. Whatever about the €200 per annum for a second house, this levy does not distinguish between those who can afford it and those who cannot. With people being terrorised by TV licence Inspectors and the cost of changing to Saorview over the next year becoming a reality people are being strectched to the limit and beyond. The proposal to access the ESB database to target homeowners smacks of Big Brother gradually getting more involved. It was the poll tax that toppled Margaret Thatcher- this is great risk for our Government.
