It is not widely known, but Robin Williams recently obtained a Divorce from his wife of nineteen years using the Collaborative process.
Two months after proceedings were filed for Divorce, the couple signed up to the process, entering into an agreement that neither party’s lawyers would use the courts if the Collaborative process broke down.
One of the clauses in the agreement read:
"We will strive to be honest, cooperative and respectful as we work in this process to achieve the future well being of our families. We commit ourselves to the collaborative law process and agree to seek a positive way to resolve our differences justly and equitably."
The agreement was to be child focussed at all times. Interviewed by Ellen de Generes, Mr Williams stated that he was lucky to be married to someone like Marsha and that they had two beautiful children.
The attraction of the Collaborative process for Celebrities is that it is completely private. All matters can be settled without issuing proceedings. The publicity invoked by the Courts process brings a spotlight to shine on a couples’ intimate problems and difficulties, and further reveals to the world the extent of their wealth.
The Collaborative process involves the parties sitting around a table with their lawyers and discussing matters to a pre agreed agenda. Professionals such as financial advisors – “neutrals”-and guidance professionals to help with parenting issues are part of the package which is designed to be child focussed.
Robin Williams lawyer has agreed to do an interview with his lawyer on his experience of the Collaborative process. This will not be available until April 2012 and is eagerly awaited.
