The recently retired 'voice of the GAA' yesterday unveiled an 'All-Star' team of high-profile men to speak out against violence towards women.
A host of familiar faces joined broadcaster Micheal O Muircheartaigh to back a new national White Ribbon Campaign to highlight the issue. Some of those who lent their support included Nacie Rice, Deputy Garda Commissioner; Mr Justice Paul Carney; Cork GAA All-Star Paudie Kissane and Senator David Norris.
Nearly one-in-five women report they have experienced violence at some stage in their lives.
Last year, more than 7,500 women accessed support body SAFE, Ireland's domestic violence service. This marked an increase of 43pc since 2007.
The campaign was launched in Dublin's Mansion House by broadcaster Miriam O'Callaghan on behalf of The Other Half, which includes domestic violence service SAFE Ireland, the Rape Crisis Network Ireland and the Men's Development Network.
Sharon O'Halloran, director of SAFE Ireland, explained that while domestic abuse had traditionally been viewed as a women's issue, men must be recognised as allies in helping to end violence against women.
