Recall of breast implants

Breast implants made by Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) have been recalled.

It is believed that up to 1,500 women in Ireland were given breast implants made by a French company called Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) which is at the centre of a health scare.  Health Officials in France have said that up to 30,000 women there may need to have the defective implants reduced by Poly Implant Prothese removed.  It is believed that the faulty implants contain a gel that becomes lumpy and granular, increasing the risk of the implant tearing and the gel leaking into the patients body which can could cause health problems.

Health Officials in France are currently conducting a study to find out if the silicone that the implants are made from could cause health problems.  They have said that if the silicone does cause health problems they will offer surgery to remove the implants.  A French Court is investigating the death of one patient in 2010 as they believe it may be linked to the implant.  The Company which made the implants is no longer trading and is accused of using industrial/grade silicone.  It is believed that more than 2,000 complaints by women with PIP implants in France have been lodged since March 2010.

There are concerns that the faulty implants may increase the risk of cancer however a Professor on RTE’s News at One said that there were no definite cancer link with this implant.  A recall of all the implants was initiated in Ireland on the 30th March 2010.
